The Tough Questions You’re Afraid to Ask

If you’re wondering why I am posting this, please see my previous entry. Thanks 🙂 — And I do not claim to have all the answers, the majority of these answers are derived from Scripture and I will not waver on them, but some of them are my opinions and they may not be fully developed. This is just me, open and honest:

Your Two Cents Worth

Are you Pro-Life or Pro-Choice? Pro-Life

Do you support abortion if the person in question is pregnant due to rape? No, I do not. Although, they did not have a say in becoming pregnant, neither did the child in coming into existence. Besides, all works out to the glory of God.

Do you support an abortion if the mother’s life is in danger? That’s a tough one. I want to say no, but I have not been in that situation…I would hope I would not and simply leave it to God. He has the power to save both and if not, it is up to Him who lives and who does not.

Do you support traditional marriage? Yes, I do. Man and Wife.

Do you support gay marriage or civil unions? I cannot answer the above question with “yes” and then say “yes” here as well.

What are your thoughts on alcohol?  I am torn on the issue of whether the Bible says not to partake of any alcoholic beverages. I do not believe in getting drunk (The Bible is clear on that!) but it seems that that is the goal of most people around me who drink, so my view of alcohol is very negative. I have a personal commitment to not drink, ever, because I do not see the point in opening that can of worms for myself. It is easy to become addicted or inebriated. Anything that has the ability to make me forget the night before is not worth getting involved with. My husband and I also have a no-alcohol-in-the-house rule.

What is your take on premarital sex? First of all, since God says it is wrong, I believe it is wrong. I believe God meant sex in the context of marriage because He loves us, not just to make rules. It is possible to wait and it is fulfilling if you do so. There is something special about knowing you are truly one with only one. Also, you don’t have to worry about the same health risks.

On a side note, if you do slip up or become saved later in life, it is still possible to re-commit (meaning don’t have sex again until you are married). It will not make you a virgin again but you will be living in obedience to God and thus be happier and more fulfilled.

What do you think of smoking? Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, so to treat it well would not be to smoke. Not to mention, the smell chokes me up and makes me feel sick.

What do you think of the stereotypical bachelor/bachelorette party? I don’t understand the mentality that you’re a “bachelor for one more night”. If you are engaged to someone, you are in a relationship. You don’t magically break it off the night before you make a lifelong commitment…and if so, are you ready for that commitment if you must get seeing other men/women in varying states of undress out of your system?

What are your thoughts on strip-clubs/ adult entertainment establishments? Whether married or not, I don’t believe strip-clubs are appropriate. God warns of lust and that is what attending shows at those places stirs up. Your mind is sure to wander.

What are your thoughts on dancing? I like to dance…now whether I look like I am having a spasm or I’m eloquently floating across the dance floor, is up to you to determine. Dancing can be a simple way to express yourself, to share a romantic moment with someone you love, to enjoy a song you like or just for exercise. I don’t see what is wrong with dancing itself. Of course, there are some forms of dancing that are a little, ahem, risqué and inappropriate…like “grinding” or the little hip-wiggle, gyrating to music, women like Beyonce do in their videos. I also have an issue with seeing girls dancing real close to one another.

Why do bad things happen to good people? A chapel speaker we had in high school pointed out there is a flaw in that question. We are not good people. So, really we should ask, “Why do good things happen to bad people?” And the answer is because we have a God of grace and of mercy…giving us those things we do not deserve and withholding from us the punishment we do deserve.

Is world peace obtainable? What would it mean for us?  From what I understand about end times, there will be peace. Otherwise, I do believe as long as sin is rampant there will be violence, war, murder etc. I think world peace means the end of the world.

Do you believe the death penalty is a fair sentence? I struggle with this one. I really don’t know. I have issue with the thought of how many innocent people may have been sentenced, but at the same time, look how many truly evil people have been sentenced to death row. I have not consulted the Bible enough on this issue to really have a solid standpoint on it though. One thing I do know, if God wants to take you home, it will happen in His time, regardless of man.

What do you think of horoscopes, palm readers etc.? I think they’re a crock and open you up to those who dabble in the darker areas. No one holds your future, outside of God above.

Do you believe divorce is an option? If no, are there any exceptions? I do not believe divorce is an option. My husband and I agree wholeheartedly on that one. We must work through. The only times I believe it is a consideration, and that is if reconciliation cannot be reached: 1) If a Christian and a Non-Christian marry, and the Non-Christian would like out of the marriage. 2) If one of the spouses has an affair.

What do you think of the statement “I don’t love you anymore?” It would be better phrased “I’m not in love with you anymore”. Love does not fail (1 Corinthians 13). If you truly love someone, it does not just die.

Do you believe that we should love everyone? I believe we should. Is it easy? Unfortunately for most, including me, the answer is no. However, we are called to love, even those we do not agree with. Disagreeing with someone and trying to point out where their beliefs differ with what the Bible says so they see the Truth isn’t not loving someone, that is love.

Are we all right and no one is wrong? I believe there are many people out there that are wrong. There are some seemingly gray areas but those that are clearly spelled out in the Bible are right, they’re truth. I also believe that there is only one true God, and therefore anyone serving a god outside of Him, is wrong. It is a false religion.

Should you share your beliefs or opinions with others? Why or why not?

Yes, because as a Christian, I am called to share the Word of God with a lost world. It is the truth and Jesus is the only way to get to Heaven. It would be a disservice to not share the “cure” for a Hell bent world.

What do you think of “separation of church and state”?

I honestly don’t know enough about the concept to say much. From what I have heard though, it isn’t in the Constitution. I could be wrong though. Mixing politics with religion can be disastrous but a man’s moral barometer will shape how they make political decisions regardless…at least they should.

Beliefs about Christianity

Are you a Christian? If so, how do you believe people are saved (become Christians)? If not, do you follow another religion or fall under a different heading?

I am a Christian. I believe I was saved by a true repentance of the heart and acknowledgement of a need for a Savior. I confessed to Christ that I am a sinner and asked for His cleansing forgiveness and for Him to dwell in my heart. I by faith accepted that He died for me on the cross.

Do you believe in the Holy Trinity?

Yes, I do. I believe that the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit are three in one.

Do you take communion in church? If you do, explain why/what it means to you.

Yes, I do. It is in remembrance of the blood Jesus shed on the cross for us and the flesh that was broken for us. I believe the juice represents the blood and the bread is a representation of the flesh.

Do you believe in sprinkling or immersion baptism?

Immersion. It is much more symbolic of the dying to the old self and rising to a new self.

Do you believe you should be baptized? Have you been and, if so, how?

I believe that in obedience to God, once you have been saved you should be baptized. Being baptized does not save you. It is a testimony to the world that you are saved and you are dead to the old self and are cleansed by Him. I was baptized in 2003, and it was by immersion.

Do you believe in Heaven?

Yes, I do.

Do you believe in Hell?

Yep.

Do you believe in angels?

Yes.

Do you believe in demons?

Yes.

Do you believe we become angels in Heaven?

No, I do not. We were created a little lower than the angels. I am not sure what form we shall take in Heaven but I believe it will be something completely new to us.

Do you believe that sins vary in severity? (Example: murder vs. a white lie)

On Earth it is easier to create different degrees of sin but in God’s eyes all sin is sin. To God a lie is just as much a sin as if you were to murder someone. We will all answer for our sins someday. If all you did wrong on this Earth was to tell a lie, you would still go to Hell, for “the wages of sin is death”.

If you are Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Episcopalian etc. does this mean you are a Christian?

It could…except Catholicism greatly disputes some of the Christian belief system (praying to Mary, different commandments etc.). Being a Baptist merely means you are a member of a certain denomination. You hold to a set of beliefs based on the Bible, which may vary from what a member of the Episcopalian denomination may believe. Simply claiming to be a part of one denomination or the other does not make you a Christian though. There is only one way to become a Christian and it is through Jesus.

What is the difference between a religion and a denomination?

As I was saying above, a denomination is merely a sect of the religion. Christianity is the religion but has groups of people who belong to denominations, such as Baptists, Alliance and Protestant. Each of these denominations may have their own interpretations of the Bible and its own routine. Whether they as a church are in-line with Christ is reflected in how true to the Bible they hold in their beliefs.

Can we converse with the dead?

No. It is possible, but not so common today, for someone to channel a spirit (demon) who may pose as your lost loved one etc., but it is a dangerous thing to dabble with. If anyone claims they can speak with the dead, run the other way.

Is there anyone outside of God we can pray to?

Nope.

Is the Bible relevant to today?

Absolutely! It is timeless.

Is the Bible completely truthful?

Yes. You can’t add to it and you can’t take away from it. It is God’s Word!

Can you recite all Ten Commandments without looking them up? (You may check after but don’t change anything.)

Oh gosh. I am not sure. Lemme see…They’ll be out of order:

1)      Thou shalt not steal.

2)      Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

3)      Thou shalt honor thy mother and father.

4)      Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor or his goods.

5)      Thou shalt not kill.

6)      Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

7)      Thou shalt not have any other gods before me.

8)      Thou shalt not make any graven images.

9)      ?

10)  ?

Hmm…let’s see how well I did. Ah man! I forgot the one about keeping the Sabbath day holy. And the adultery commandment… Wow, didn’t do so well on the spot 😛 I may not have worded the other ones perfectly but I did get basic ideas. Phew! J

What is the best weapon against the Enemy?

The Word of God. “Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17)

What is the true measure of a Christian?

His heart and walk with Christ. Only God knows the heart of man, his intentions and deeds. Only He can truly judge us in the end.

If you’re saved you’re going to Heaven regardless of how many times you sin so why bother with any of the “rules” in the Bible?

As I mentioned above, God knows the heart. If you genuinely strive to serve Him and obey His Word, then He will recognize this. You lead a much happier life when you are in obedience with Christ. He will forgive if you seek forgiveness and He does know when you are truly repentant. God points out many times in scripture the blessings that you will receive if you are obeying. So, you should not look at it as sinning because you are saved and forgiven anyway, but rather choosing to obey because you were saved and forgiven despite you.

Once saved, always saved?

I believe in eternal security, yes. “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:28) If we were saved by works, then no man could be saved and it would completely void the whole reason Jesus died on the cross.
