I am a huge fan of BTS, which means I am ARMY (aka: Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth). Last year, V (Kim Taehyung), one of the members of BTS, released a collab of “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby. The late singer’s voice blended well with the deep crooning of V’s added vocals. As part of the promotion for this collaboration, fans were sent a recipe for sugar cookies aptly titled V’s Sugar Cookie Recipe. I printed the recipe out, excited to have an excuse to bake.
Unfortunately, while I was able to bake several of our traditional Christmas goodies last year, I burnt out before I got to the sugar cookies. While cookie cutters and sugar cookie dough aren’t things you only get out at Christmastime, I have had a rough year healthwise and never found an opportunity to try the recipe. Once again, Christmas rolled around and I determined it would be better to spread out my baking over the course of my break from teaching, rather than try to get it all done in one afternoon (like I did last year).

~This standing mixer has been a huge help to me in the kitchen!~
Obviously, I made V’s sugar cookies a priority or else I wouldn’t be writing this update! I also whipped up a batch of gingerbread cookies. That makes it sound like it was a breeze! It took me quite a while to make it happen. I often move slowly, and I was powering through no small amount of pain, but I got it done. I may have also been a wee bit distracted by the movies I put on for the kids. I don’t remember having seen Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas as a child, nor since then, so it kept drawing my eye away from the task at hand. Afterward I was able to focus a bit more, because I put my daughter’s favourite Christmas movie on, which I’ve seen multiple times. It’s a cheesy, feel-good Hallmark movie called On the Twelfth Day of Christmas and she was excited I was able to find it on-demand this year because I’ve never been able to track down a physical copy of it (if one even exists).

~I got some tree cookie cutters from my Secret Sister at church, just in time for this activity!~

My daughter eventually joined me in cutting some shapes into the cookie dough, and once the sweet treats started coming out of the oven, I cleaned up my prep space to prepare for decorating the cookies. Neither of my kids seemed too interested, so I asked Raymond if he wanted to come ice some cookies with me. He got a rhythm going, choosing all tree-shaped cookies, and decorating each of them the same way: green frosting and round sprinkles. I wasn’t being too fancy, but I did try to mix it up. As fun as it is to put candy on gingerbread men and give cookies more personality, I didn’t really want anything other than sprinkles and icing this year.
When my oldest kiddo joined us, she decided to mix colours, using a plate as her palette. She achieved details in her icing with toothpicks. When we were starting to see the end of the pile, my dear oblivious son popped up and asked what we were doing. I promise, I had asked if he wanted to join in the process at multiple points throughout the afternoon. Anyway, I promptly stopped decorating so he had plenty to decorate himself. His sister had already sampled some of the cookies earlier, so when he asked if he could have some I, of course, obliged.

~Followed the instructions for icing, included in the recipe.~

~Ready to make them festive!~

~They’re perfectly imperfect and I love them! (Poor horsey snapped in half.)~
Then we hurriedly cleaned up our mess, tossed the dishes in the sink, and stowed the cookies away in containers before hurrying out the door to go see the Christmas lights in our small city’s park. I wanted to make sure we got to see them this year, and we’d left it really late this year. So, I had arranged with Raymond that we would go that evening. My teenagers weren’t as enamored by the display this year, and it felt like we walked through it in record time, but I was glad to get some fresh air, especially because it was about a clear night and about 60*F. I’ll take that over shivering to the bone, and traipsing through mud from days of rain, like we have in years past.

~I love Christmas lights and I love my family, so win-win.~

After dinner, we curled up to watch A Muppet Christmas Carol, a first for all of us. I selected some cookies and other treats as movie snacks. We hadn’t done a lot of things that felt “Christmasy”, so it was nice to have at least one day where we enjoyed some Christmas entertainment. Plus, it felt good to accomplish something I have been wanting to make happen. I’m not a big fan of sugar cookies, but I do like them in moderation. I can attest V’s recipe was good, though, and certainly better than the pre-made Pillsbury dough or the sugar cookies in the bakery with a foot of frosting on top. (I really don’t like those bakery sugar cookies!) Anything baked from scratch at home is going to be easier for me to control ingredients of, so that’s a win for my body’s well-being too. If you don’t already have a go-to sugar cookie recipe, you should give this one a try.
~The not-so-pretty aftermath. Thankfully, we have a dishwasher (which is graciously back to behaving for the moment).~

Goal Accomplished: December 23, 2025.
