Number Thirty: Cako Cupcakes

I celebrated my twenty-ninth birthday on the twentieth of July. Enough time has elapsed since this occasion that I was starting to think that the list of thirty things I wanted to accomplish before turning thirty was more of a burden than a joy. If I have to hear one more time about how I need to get a driver’s license, I might snap. I am well aware of the need, I am just scared witless to be on the road. To recapture the undaunted enthusiasm I had at sixteen when my parents took me to the DMV to get my permit would be awesome. Documentation issues, or whatever the reason was the DMV had for turning me away, meant I got to sit around awhile and watch all of my peers getting their driver’s licenses. Then in the time it took for me to acquire the appropriate status to apply for a license I got to hear about accidents. Everyone had some sort of story and the longer I live the more I am terrified to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Adding my own precious cargo (ie. my children) to the mix, only heightens my anxiety. All this aside, I am aware it would behoove me to get a license. I put it on the list! I know!

Getting my license was the first thing I put on my list and it has been breathing down my neck, demanding my attention. I began to regret making it a goal because it put all the more pressure on me. I couldn’t even remember three quarters of the items on my list because of number one. I thought I would have one or two checked off by now. I was starting to get into that funk I fall so easily into. It was beginning to seem like a lost cause already; until last night.

My husband messaged me from work to say he was running late. I was a little frustrated because dinner was just about ready, but I set aside a plate for him. He had just taken off three days last week for our anniversary, so my assumption was that he had work to catch up on. When he got home, he sat a paper bag on the table next to me and apologized once more for being late, but hoped I would not mind given the contents of the bag. I peeked inside. It was a plastic container of miniature Cako cupcakes!

Tucked at the very bottom of my list of “Thirty Before Thirty” was, “Try some more cupcakes from Cako.” I had already tried a few different flavors when we lived in California a few years ago, so I was eager to indulge in some more. I had all but given up on finishing my list because of the more challenging goals. They were all I saw. Then a container of dainty cupcakes kindled my fire. My husband had been late because he swung by the mall to purchase some Cako goodies for me, since I had mentioned it was something I wanted to do sometime.

Somehow, my fella even managed to bring home a nice sampling of flavors so that there were new ones for me to try as well as some that I have already had before, but am more than happy to enjoy again. So, here we go! This is my first item checked off of the list. It doesn’t change the fact that I am more than a tad stressed about the need for a driver’s license, but it has reignited my enthusiasm about the rest of the list. I actually dared to glance at the rest of it today and realized that some of it is actually within my reach. Silly me! Ready to give up before I even started. Mmm cupcakes!
