Panning for Gold

I turned twenty-nine today. Nothing about the day really went as planned and there are some aspects I would like to altogether forget. However, I do think it misleading to say the day was good. It depends on how you look at it. When panning for gold, you may shift your pan around, sloshing its contents back and forth in the fervent hunt for a tiny glimmer of gold. But when you find that small nugget of metal, you rejoice, certain there must be more where that came from. So, I am panning for gold.

Gold: My day started with a phone call from my uncle, wishing me a, “Happy Birthday!”

Gold: My little girl had decorated my chair at the table so it was special for me.

Gold: One of my dearest friends called to wish me a, “Happy Birthday!”

Gold: My husband prepared breakfast for everyone and made the adults some coffee.

Gold: I received a lovely handmade card from my excited little girl (five years old).

Gold: My husband took care of a few chores I really did not want to deal with, including dishes and scheduling when our doors would be painted (since they are sprucing up our condo building).

Gold: I got to have Chick-fil-A for lunch, thanks to my husband running out to get some for us all.

Gold: I did get to open a present from my parents.

Gold: My husband baked carrot cake cupakes from scratch and mixed up some homemade cream cheese frosting. He then, with some help from my daughter, decorated them too.

Gold: I got to play Mario Kart 8 with my daughter.

Gold: Several of my friends sent me birthday wishes and sweet messages on Facebook.

Gold: I got a letter in the mail from a friend!

Gold: My husband got me a subscription to Nerd Block Classic (Though, he was disappointed my first box did not arrive today.)

Gold: The cupcakes were delicious and my family sang “Happy Birthday” to me.

Gold: I got to see my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and nephew on Skype.

Gold: My three-year-old son was thrilled when I said, “Okay”, in response to, “Play with me!” He is obsessed with Paw Patrol right now and I get to be Ryder, sending the pups on missions.

Gold: My best friend wrote a special message about me on Facebook.

Gold: I got to get outside and breathe in some fresh air, while the kids played on the playground.

Gold: Despite some of the ugliness of the day, my husband is still sitting next to me and laughing with me.

Gold: When I had a moment of weakness and told God he didn’t love me, I backtracked and said, “Of course, I know that’s not true…I just need to be reminded sometimes.” My three-year-old promptly sat in my lap and said, “I love you.” I cried tears of joy. God hears me…and He still loves me, even when I say stupid things and have to ask for forgiveness.

Gold: While we were outside, my daughter gushed to one of the neighbors, “It’s my Mommy’s birthday!” She was so enthusiastic about today and a great little helper. The neighbor wished me a genuine, “Happy Birthday,” as well.

Gold: My sweet little girl dressed up for the day in her Pinkie Pie dress. She laid out her outfit last night, which she only does for church and special occasions.

Gold: My husband cleaned up after all the festivities.

Gold: We are about to watch an episode of Girl Meets World, now that the kids are in bed.

I am glad that I went panning for gold. It’s true, once I found a small nugget, I wanted to keep searching for more. While I do pray tomorrow goes better, I am grateful for the shimmer that was still found today.
