Sometimes the simplest of things can start the gears turning in my head. I found the premise of Stranger Than Fiction to be very enlightening. I suppose that’s because I am feeling particularly reflective as of late. I could relate to Harold (the main character in this movie). I may not hear an audible voice (as he did) narrating my life, but I am aware of the many voices around me, that help influence the direction my life takes. The Author of my life has ultimate say (thankfully!) over where I end up in life; But He often allows me to choose the path I’ll take to get to His ultimate plan. Unfortunately, I am only human and repeatedly let the wrong voices shape my story.
In the movie, Harold is going about his daily routine when out of nowhere he begins to hear a voice narrating his life. Throughout the movie he seeks answers, such as “Who is narrating?” and, “Can I change the outcome of this storyline?” As stated, I have a tendency to listen to the negative voices. God tries to get through but I am too busy tuning into the world’s way of thinking. When I do this, I miss out on the brilliant masterpiece God has already created in me.
God knows each intricate detail about me and weaves people in and out of my life for better or worse. I believe that there is a lot of be said for positive thinking and have said time and again in my blogs, that the media we allow into our lives greatly influences our thoughts and subsequent actions. Of course, we do have self-control but steering clear of temptation is much easier when I’m in step with my conscience. Each day I face many starting points. I make seemingly small choices, that can actually set the course for that day or even week. Many decisions I must make, have me standing before two paths. One is right and one is wrong. The Author of my life allows me to pick which path I’ll choose but not without some much-needed prompting (through the Holy Spirit). If I truly think on it, the majority of decisions I’m faced with yield a clear and concise answer to which is the wrong way and which is the right. Don’t be fooled into thinking I always choose the right path. Yes, knowing full-well I’ve brushed off my conscience and chosen to sin. This should come as no surprise to anyone, but I fear there are people who have made me sound as if I am locked in a bubble. I’m a Christian but trust me, I make poor decisions daily. However, this is not the point of this entry.
The point I am getting at, is that even though Harold was unsure of who was writing a story about him, I am well aware of who the Author of my story is. I wish I followed closer to how He would have acted in my shoes but I am just glad he’s there with white-out in hand. He doesn’t hold all the stupid things I say or do against me. Even though I do not know what He has written on the pages of my life to come, I do know that my story has a happy ending. Regardless of how many detours I take, or apparently unnecessary plot twists I create for myself, I will live eternally in the presence of God. The great thing is: He is the author of your life as well!
If you’re feeling lost and there are too many voices in your life (media, Satan, friends, family), telling you how things are going to be or how they’re supposed to be, tune into the one voice who can be heard above it all. He knows each day of your life; whether you’ll marry, have kids, buy a Ferrari…He knows it all! It’s hard not knowing what’s in store in the meantime. Our story has already gone to the publisher and been sent to print. However, if you could choose a happy ending or a tragic ending; wouldn’t you rather have a happy ending? Wouldn’t you rather leave your life in the hands of the One who is love? He’s a much underrated Author in this world, but I am glad He penned His name on the cover of my book. I’m glad that the final page of my book will read “Happily ever after.” Will yours?
