#16: Start My Woobles Kit

I bought some crochet hooks and a beautiful blue yarn several years ago now, in one of my many let’s-try-a-new-hobby phases. My Mom assisted me via online chats, and I got a strand of crocheted yarn completed but that is about it. It’s tacked to the pin board in my room to remind me I can do hard things if I set my mind to them. When Woobles came out with a line of BT21 kits a few years ago, I was eager to give learning to crochet something another try. So, I purchased the Shooky kit, since his pattern looked whole and didn’t reduce him to just a disembodied head. I then tucked the kit away in my art room.

~My Shooky kit arrived August 25, 2023.~

That Woobles kit has made its rounds around my art room as I have attempted multiple ways to organize my craft and art supplies, never able to settle on a system that quite works. It remained unopened. This is partly why I was very careful with the wording of this challenge. It sounded like the perfect project but I get overwhelmed when trying new things, and learning on my own is not my strongest skill. Sometimes a project or activity sounds great, but then when I attempt it I realize that it’s not enjoyable or it’s not something I enjoy enough to power through the challenges that come with it.

When I sat down to finally attempt to create a crocheted Shooky, I was afraid that my plans had been thwarted right out of the gate. I followed the QR code to a screen where I put in the provided password, only to be told it no longer worked. So, I logged into my Woobles account and thankfully was able to access the instructions this way. I think it’s frustrating to not have paper instructions along with the instructional videos they provide online, because I wanted to thoroughly understand the process.

~Finally checking out what came in my kit! (April 9, 2026).~

I found the videos both helpful and frustrating. The person walking me through the steps does the stitches from the perspective I needed, so that is a plus. When I was trying to get assistance from my Mom all those years ago, she was facing me, and my brain was having trouble translating her stitches to my perspective. My brain does not comprehend things like spatial math problems. So long as the instructor went one stitch at a time, I was good. It was when they started taking the training wheels off, or my circle of yarn didn’t quite look the same, that I veered off course. Until I get a rhythm going, I really need step by step, step by step… Just hold my hand the whole time, please. It was hurting my brain trying to figure out where I’d gone wrong, and it was literally hurting my angry hand and wrist.

~They start the initial circle for you, but I did make some progress. (April 9, 2026)~

~More progress! Starting to look sooo much like Shooky…lol. (April 10, 2026)~

So, while I was proud of the progress I did make on Shooky, he is nowhere near done. I made the decision to table the project for now. There are still some other items on my Forty Before Forty that need my attention, so if I can backtrack at some point I will but for now I am happy with leaving my Woobles kit incomplete. If I do finish him, I’ll come back with photos in the wrap-up post I do for my birthday. In the meantime, both wrists are flaring something awful after I drove for multiple hours over the week-end, and typing up this blog post isn’t doing me any favors. Hopefully, it will be feeling rested enough when I am ready to share my next achievement from the Forty Before Forty challenge!
