My little boy, RJ, loves cars. He is obsessed. He also thoroughly enjoys planes, boats and trains. Basically if it goes, he’s all about it. This kid names his sister’s Pokemon “car” whenever she asks what he would like to dub her latest catch. When playing in his sister’s room, he sat a car on a chair in her dollhouse, across from an alligator. They were having lunch together. So, it should come as no shock at all that he has been chomping at the bit to ride a train since he learned that was a possibility.
My husband used to ride the train to work or at least home from work, many times a week. However, we live close enough to his current job that he simply drives to work, despite the trains that run in our area. RJ enjoys being stuck at a railroad when the arm comes down because he gets to watch a train speed by. Naturally, we told the kid they were the sort of train people can ride on and the rest is history. He has been determined to get on one and I have been eager to make it happen. However, we all know how best laid plans go…
When the opportunity for RJ to go on a train arose, I didn’t even mind anymore that I would not be a part of the event. I was on my date with Natascha, and RJ was having his long-awaited Daddy-Son afternoon. I simply asked my husband to be sure to snap some pictures. He did not disappoint either! Here is a sampling for your enjoyment.

At one point, my husband said that RJ looked as if he were about to drift off to sleep. His head was resting against the chair and he was staring out the window, watching the world rush by in a blur. He thought to himself that he must be getting bored, but RJ piped up, “I’m having fun riding the train, Daddy.”
That line melted my heart and told me all I needed to know about how my little boy took the experience. I am glad to be checking this one off of my Thirty Before Thirty list because this was about making my little boy’s day. I know that afternoon of riding the train with his Daddy made his day because he has been going on about it all week, telling anyone who will listen and repeating the story to those who already have. This is one of the best things I have been able to check off yet!
