Soundtrack To My Life

These are some songs that over the years have come to really take me back to certain times in my life. I must admit, I am kinda doing this for my own reference but maybe some of these songs were important to you growing up. They may not have the same memory or feeling attached to them, but they could stir you to think of some special memories you have attached to music. Enjoy:) *

Straight Up-Paula Abdul
  • I think I was about 5 or 6 when I heard this song. Later on in life, I discovered that I had kinda messed up the lyrics, but it was catchy. Anytime I hear it, I think of bobbing to it in the car and singing "Straight up now tell me/Do you really want to love me professor?/ oh oh oh" (real lyrics being:  Straight up now tell me/ Do you really want to love me forever?/ oh oh oh) Don’t ask me what that was supposed to mean!

The Motown Song-Rod Stewart

  • This song just gives me this night life feel. I heard it a lot around the same time as Paula Abdul’s Straight Up. I particularly remember one night pulling up to the apartment building we lived in, and this playing. I don’t remember anything else about that moment, just the song playing, and looking up at the building. I suppose that’s why it has a nighttime feel to it. It may not be one of my all-time favourite songs now, but it still takes me back.

…Baby One More Time-Britney Spears

  • I was in 7th or 8th grade when this song was really popular. I remember wondering why on earth she wanted him to haul off and smack her. It sounded painful… Despite being confused on the meaning of the song, I remember flopping on the couch every Saturday to watch The Hit List  on YTV. I thought she had such a cool music video, with those plaid skirts and the pig-tail braids, and dancing. I attempted often to dance as well. Wow, this song brings back a lot of humiliating admissions.

Scar Tissue-Red Hot Chili Peppers

  • This was definitely 8th grade during my Red Hot Chili Peppers phase. I had an embarrassing crush on Anthony Keidis . I think it’s true we go for opposites, ’cause he is very much not what I would actually want in reality. Anyway, this song not only digs up such thoughts as those, but also I hear it and think of summer and walking with my best friends Beth and Becky between our homes (we lived in different complexes along the same road), singing this over and over.

What’s My Age Again?-blink 182

  • I just recently heard this song while riding in someone else’s car. It’s not the most pleasant song lyrically I have come to find, but it immediately brought up this ridiculous memory I shared with my whacky friends Beth and Becky. We seriously did walk back and forth between our homes, whether it be to pick up stuff for an impromptu sleep-over at one of our houses, or just to drop them off. Sometimes we were in more of a hurry so we’d run down the sidewalk three by three. I made the mistake of mentioning how it reminded me of the video for What’s My Age Again? …well, nudity aside. So, it came to be another song we’d sing as we’d run down the sidewalk. People must have thought we were nuts, and even if they’d have told us, I don’t think we’d have minded. We knew very well how insane we were .

My Heart Will Go On-Celine Dion

  • I really can’t listen to this song anymore. It just makes me so sad. I thought Titanic was a terrible movie and it breaks my heart to think of the real Titanic and the people aboard it who really died. Anyway, I am of a minority who think such about this movie, but the reason I have included this song is because of the powerful impact it does have. There are songs you crank up because they take you back to a memory long ago you want to relive for a moment. Some songs come on the radio and you quickly change it to another channel. I like Celine Dion, and I do own this song. It’s beautiful. However, it really makes me sad. Plus, it reminds me of my friends in 6th grade and the obession one of them had with Leonardo Dicaprio. Thus, I have been in the theatre watching this movie three times. Oh the things we do to be included.

Say You’ll Be There-Spice Girls

  • I grew up listening to Steve Green, and Jungle Jam and other Christian children’s tapes. I didn’t complain, because I really enjoyed those (and still do!). When I came to public school the idea that there was other music out there was profound. I was introduced to the Spice Girls in 5th grade. From there I went on to get Spice, Spiceworld  the cd, and Spiceworld  the movie. I was one of the girls who got all excited about the new spice girls candy and stickers, bought a Spice Girls hat and claimed "I like sporty spice best!" Yeah, I was a dork. Anyway, all of this floods my mind when I hear this particular song. Any Spice Girl song reminds me of my Spice Girls phase but this one is still kinda catchy and is one of the older ones so it has more of an impact.

School’s Out-Alice Cooper

  • This one makes me smile. My dad was in radio and I think he passed along the genetic mapping for a music freak to me. He constantly would play his music and say "You know this band started in 1970 with lead frontman…" and proceed to give me a mini history lesson. I used to get annoyed but I think often it was more of a front. I did learn a lot from him and I miss being able to answer him when he quizzes me, "Who sings this?" Alice Cooper is someone I grew up hearing about. It became tradition somewhere around when we moved back to Woodstock that on the last day of school he’d play School’s Out. I looked forward to him saying, "Oh yeah, you’re off for the summer now,"  popping in the cd and blasting this song. I love my dad!

Monster Mash-Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers

  • I know Halloween is not a Christian celebration, so we didn’t do anything to acknowledge it this year. Plus, it all creeps me out. However, I was disappointed that I did not get to hear the Monster Mash this year. My dad used to play it on Halloween, and it was usually on the radio around that time. It really reminds me of my dad and how things used to be. I really miss my family, and all I did was just play a clip of the song and it took me back.

In The Ghetto-Elvis

  • I used to think that he was singing about some kid in a place called Nigetto… I hear this song and it feels like I am back in our truck on a rainy day, driving either from or to Sudbury. We often made the 6 hour drive to visit our family in Woodstock and my dad would pop in his Elvis tapes for background music. I wish he knew how much these things stuck with me. I was only 7 at the time, but I can still remember our favourite burger stop along the way (Champ Burger or something ) and Elvis crooning us as we drove along.

In My Life-The Beatles

  •  This is probably a weird one. It reminds me of the Lassie movie that came out around 1995 or something. They play it while the teenage son is remembering his mother. It really sets the mood for the scene. There’s just something about it. It’s one of those feelings I cannot quite pin-point.

Well, for now I  think you’ve put up with enough of my odd ball life. Hey, maybe you learned some things about me (whether you wanted to or not:S). Feel free to share some songs that take you back:)

*I do not necessarily endorse all of the songs still:)
