The Compass of Life

Today, my boyfriend (Ray) came by and took me out for the day. We began with a destination, but once the errands were completed we did not know what to do. After some thought we decided to just drive toward his old highschool. This put us on the road to the main town, so we figured we’d hang out there. Being new to driving, Ray had no clue where we were going and I was soon lost as well. For a couple hours we drove around in circles, until finally we did something right and found ourselves in town. Stressed and worn we stopped to say hi to some of Ray’s old co-workers, stopped by the school where my parents work, only to find them gone and headed back home. Needless to say, the day was rather shot. We were both incredibly stressed, frustrated and tired. Being lost is not a comfortable state to be in.

Often I find myself lost on the backroads of life. An important decision confronts me, but I take a detour to prolong the answer and end up more confused. Unlike the roads we drive on, the paths we choose are not always well marked, directing us where to go, coaching us in what to say etc. What point of reference do we even have? Where does the compass of life point its arrow? Believe it or not, there is an answer. In my life, I’ve held out this compass and found Jesus standing before my eyes, He said to me, "I am the way and the truth and the life." (John 14:6)

I must admit, as much as I love my Savior, I still can get lost. Things get stressful, I get upset and ignore His guiding light, kinda like I did today when I did not listen to my gut and we ended up going in another big circle. Driving past an obvious sign of direction is just plain stupid. You know you’re going to get lost. So, why pass up the chance to have the all-purpose-road-map on hand? The right way to follow is drawn out in the Bible. Take this verse for example: "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? You are not your own." (1 Corinthians 6:19) Now, how on earth does this show me where to go? Remember it the next time you have to decide whether to starve yourself or not. I had an anxiety problem that caused me to lose my appetitie. I got so nauseous I did not want to eat. Not eating only made me more nauseous and less likely to eat. It was a vicious cycle. Finally, I got so sickly I was put into the hospital to get my strength up. If I had truly taken this verse to heart I would have taken the right path. "Eat!" That was the direction painted across the sign. Now I know, when I get anxious and I know I am not sick, simply upset, the path labeled "1 Corinthians 6:19: Eat" is the one I take. Sounds silly doesn’t it? However, such simple road signs are ignored every day on our parts if we are honest with ourselves.

Take this to heart and the next time you find yourself hopelessly lost, talk to your very own OnStar, built into you. He knows where you are going, even if you do not. When He chooses not to reveal where you are going right away, keep on His path and you will get there. Don’t drive around lost anymore, with Jesus we are no longer lost we are found. There is a parable in the Bible that tells of a shepherd who has lost one of his sheep. He searches all over for this one sheep, and when he finds it goes home, "Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ " (Luke 15:6b) Jesus cares if you are lost and He will find you, if you seek Him.

"Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light for my path." (Psalm 119:105)
